The Joy of DIY

Do you like to look at old ideas and think about how to give a modern twist to it? If your answer is yes we welcome you to the DIY club. Designing your own outfit is like changing the fashion to fit you. After all, Fashion fades style is eternal. This must have happened with most of us that we come across a stunning rida / dress but can’t afford it. A simple solution to this is designing your own and slay it with confidence. We hold this absolutely true that everyday is a fashion show and the world is your runway.

To motivate and encourage all you inbuilt designers we present to you a few ridas exclusively handcrafted by US. To make your life easy we have also given deets to where you can find what to make and flaunt your own outfit.

This elegant party wear Rida is completed DIY. We know when we say this you will give it another look and think to yourself not possible. But it’s true. This two toned fabric was a gift which I thought to transform into something that will turn heads. Since I wanted to make it a party wear I decided to complement it with a golden floral lace (found at one of the lace shops), the leaf lace is from Iraq (something I had from before). To give it a dainty touch further we added the zardosi work patch available at one of the Mumbai markets called CPchawl. To complete the look we approached a local embroider and with his help added shimmer dots all over. In a fraction of days a chic Rida was ready.

The next Rida we designed was a daily casual one. I don’t clearly remember where the fabric is from however, I found the cute chevron lace and check border at the market mentioned above. Loved it so much that simply layered it till the top. The colourful flowers you see patched up are just stuck appropriately. Next my local embroider was to the rescue, added stars to give my outfit a dreamy look, just as I wanted. Doesn’t look that simple right?

This next Rida was a complete brainstorming session with loads of inspiration from some of the most extraordinary designers we have come across on Instagram. So I got this very beautiful base fabric with tiny rose prints from @thefabricsouq and planned on making it a Rida that would stand out. Another visit and I bought some borders from her. While brainstorming the parallel lace idea struck me and I set about designing the rida. Within no time the Rida setting was done and believe it or not the Rida was completed in just 2 days! This Rida remains my favorite!

The last smart colorful ensemble may look very well designed for a DIY, but believe me I made it from scratch! This is quite an old Rida when the trend for such triangular borders was very much in trend. I called up a friend and we went on fabric hunting! After choosing the base (when small dots were so much in-vogue) I went crazy with colors and got these pinks and yellows! Gave the whole concept to my tailor and he did an excellent job with the border and flowers. Yes, I did ask him to add some bling! I was young guys, didn’t know the best. But yes, it was an amazing Rida nonetheless.

Remember, people will stare, make it worth their while!

Celebrating Women’s Day with Aplomb

Being an entrepreneur leads to a number of hardships, but if you are a woman, be ready to face a multitude of problems! But what sets women entrepreneurs apart from others? Do they conduct business differently? Or are they more efficient? The answer lies in the fact that women entrepreneurs manage multiple roles beautifully. They are the homemakers as well as the breadwinners. They are responsible for the well-being of their kids while also ensuring that their professional roles are adequately managed. This talent of being multifaceted is unique for women and therefore they make for excellent entrepreneurs.

Home Industry Incubator (Hi!) recently celebrated International Women’s Day with a very interesting campaign. Hi! which is predominantly owned and managed by women employees is a prime example of successful women entrepreneurship. The campaign focused on promoting all of the women clients who run a successful start-up or an established organization. From apparel makers to home bakers and even coaching class owners. It was delightful to read their stories and understand the underlying principle which makes them a success. It was aptly observed that each of these successful entrepreneurs have trusted their instincts in their craft and have thus gone ahead and established their brands. These women are successfully running their organizations while also being married, running the home and doing other ‘duties’ which are expected off them.

The campaign then shifted their focus towards their own employees who are playing different roles and are helping the company to grow. Again, what one could observe from these amazing stories was the fact that every employee had a vision for themselves and they set about to achieve it. Not only did they consider hustling and achieving something big, they worked towards it meticulously. Given the immense talent that is backing this company, no wonder it is reaching the sky!

Women entrepreneurs in our humble opinion will bring about a major change in the corporate world. It will slowly build the industry and make it more accepting of all genders. Not very long ago, women were considered the weaker sex and were confined to traditional roles. But these barriers have been broken and today what women can achieve is open for all to see and learn. It won’t be long when women will be at par with men at everything.

This blog is thus dedicated to all the strong women who took it upon themselves to rise above the obvious and play multiple roles. To make their mission to make a name for themselves and not be known only for being someone’s daughter, wife or mother. It is time, they banded together for the achievement of personal as well as professional goals!

To end this blog, let us quote Hillary Clinton:

“Women are the largest untapped reservoir of talent in the World.” So don’t leave them untapped, let them soar and achieve!

Food; what culture tastes like

Have you ever wondered what the food you eat everyday can tell you about where you come from? Have you ever wondered why people from different parts of the world eat different types of food? Do you ever ask yourself why certain foods or culinary traditions are so important to your culture? There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think.

On an individual level, we grow up eating the food of our cultures. It becomes a part of who each of us are.

Traditional cuisine is passed down from one generation to the next. It also operates as an expression of cultural identity. Each country or community’s unique cuisine can reflect its unique history, lifestyle, values, and beliefs. After all food is one of the world’s only ways of universal communication

The three cuisines we will talk about today are Balinese, Egyptian and Iraqi.

The reason we chose these cuisines is because we have relished their authentic taste.

Balinese

Being Indonesian with influences of Chinese and Indian cuisines, the food in Bali has a unique identity, as with much of Southeast Asia, rice is a staple here. With Bali’s sophisticated irrigation systems, this is quite understandable. This is accompanied by vegetables, meat and seafood. The dishes are cooked in rich spices such as ginger, lime, nutmeg, clove, coriander, and shallots.

Your gastronomical experience in Bali is as enchanting and full of discovery as your cultural experience. Well, typically, a meal consists of a plate of steamed rice, and a number of main courses. Instead of eating one course at a time a la Western meals, the main courses, and sometimes including the soup, are all eaten at once. Soup is poured over the rice much like a steak sauce is poured over the steak. Desserts are mostly tropical fruits, which by themselves are enough of a feast and a reason to visit Bali!

The most popular Balinese dishes which we tasted are; Sate (or “satay”) are marinated, skewered and grilled meats, served with spicy sauce, and may consist of diced or sliced chicken, goat, mutton, beef, fish, tofu, eggs or minced blends. Nasi Goreng is Indonesia’s fried rice, one of the nation’s most notable dishes. It is pre-steamed rice stir-fried with a combination of meats and vegetables, ranging from scrambled eggs, diced beef, strips of chicken, shrimp, anchovies, lamb, crab, green peas, onions, shallots and a blend of sweet soy sauce and hot chili sauce. Mie Goreng is another staple where the rice is replaced with noodles in Nasi Goreng.

The image features the typical toppings: sliced tomatoes and/or cucumber, fried shallots, fish or shrimp krupuk crackers and mixed pickles or acar

Egypt

The Egypt cuisine combines elements from across the Middle East and North Africa, as well as Greece and France, reflecting the diverse influences that have shaped her history. Egyptian chefs often put their own spin on these beloved foods. The cuisine makes heavy use of legumes, vegetables and fruit from Egypt’s rich Nile Valley and Delta.

Egyptian cuisine wouldn’t be the same without its bread! It’s delicious and an important part of almost every meal. During your visit, you’ll find plenty of Eish baladi (bread) to wrap up all your falafel and kebabs and dip into flavorful sauces. Ta’meya is Egyptian fava bean falafel that is fried and served with tahina and Egyptian bread. They can be eaten with breakfast, lunch, and dinner but are most often served as an accompaniment to another Egyptian fava bean dish called ful medames. Ful medames is cooked fava beans with vegetables and spices. It’s a staple in Egyptian culture and is thought to date back to ancient Egypt. If you are a meat lover then you are going to enjoy Egypt’s kebabs and kofta. Egyptian kebab is usually prepared with grilled lamb or veal while kofta is also grilled but made from minced meat. Both kebab and kofta are traditionally served with Egyptian bread, salad, and tahina.

The image shows kofta, shish tawook, hummus salad ,babaganush and tahini

Cheese is another important staple and is actually thought to have originally come from the middle east. Tea is the national drink in Egypt and holds a special spot in Egyptian culture. Tea is enjoyed throughout the day both during meals and in-between

Iraqi

Iraqi food is so strongly influenced by its neighbouring countries, Turkey and Iran, it is one of the few nations of the Middle East to lack a unique cuisine. Like the Turks, Iraqis like to stuff vegetables and eat a lot of lamb, rice, and yogurt. Like Iranians, they enjoy cooking fruits with beef and poultry. Hospitality is considered a highly admired asset to the Iraqis. Iraqis are known for being very generous and polite.

A typical Iraqi meal starts with a mezze (appetizer), such as kebabs , which are cubes of marinated meat cooked on skewers. Soup is usually served next, which is drunk from the bowl, not eaten with a spoon. For gadaa and ashaa, Arabic for lunch and dinner, the meals are much alike. A simple main course, such as lamb with rice is served, followed by a salad and khubaz , a flat wheat bread served buttered with fruit jelly on top. Other popular dishes include quzi (stuffed roasted lamb), kibbe (minced meat, nuts, raisins, and spices), and kibbe batata (potato-beef casserole). Falafel is a popular Iraqi street food available in two variants veg and non-veg. Dates make their way into many dishes, especially ever popular date and nut balls, commonly made with walnuts or pistachios, and fly off the shelves like a Middle Eastern candy bar.

This just shows that each country has their own set of traditions and different standards of food. Even though the details are different, ever country has one thing in common—they all love food.

As the world becomes more globalized, it is easier to access cuisines from different cultures.

Love Laughter and Happily Ever After

Weddings in urban India have lately been all glitz and glam. From food to the venue to the bride/groom couture, spends on everything are enormous. Even if you want to have a low budget wedding, because of society pressure you end up eventually having a big fat one. The concern of wasting one’s hard earn money on pleasing others has led us to drought down why you should save on weddings and how small thoughtful gestures while doing so can bring a broad smile on someone’s face.

In light of all these social pressures to “go big or go home” for your wedding day, it’s sadly not a surprise that many couples overspend and end up in debt. But that’s no way to begin what should be an amazing new chapter of your life, especially considering money is one of the top reasons for divorce.
Instead of going overboard on wedding expenses, the easiest way to avoid spending too much on your wedding is to budget appropriately and focus on everything else you want to accomplish in life.
Even if you are well to do by gods grace and want to make your big day lavish, you are still spending to please others right? Rather it would be wise to safeguard it for yourself and your spouse.Go for the most exotic honeymoon, tick off places your travel checklist, give a great education to your kids.

To answer the question of how much you should spend on your wedding, you need to take your other goals into consideration. Budgeting simply means aligning your spending with your values, so you have money left to spend on the things you treasure. Getting clear on your priorities while planning for your wedding will help you say “yes” and “no” to the appropriate things. One of the best ways to save money on a wedding is to keep it simple. The more elaborate the gown, the food menu and gifts are the more expensive it will get. Do you even wear your wedding gown after the wedding day? What happens to the extravagant decor for each function? After a few days no one even remembers what they ate at a wedding.

Well, if someone will remember and really appreciate your wedding are the ones who never get to attend one. Consider donating leftover food from your wedding meal to a local homeless shelter, women’s shelter or retirement homes. While planning your wedding contact a few NGOs or keep a family member/friend responsible for the leftover food. Brief them in advance so you don’t have to worry on your D day. Flowers and other decorations can also be donated to these locations to brighten up someone’s day.

Your wedding is one of the most special days of your life, but it can also be one of the most wasteful. We’re not saying to skip the party, we’re talking about seemingly small changes that make a major impact. Yes we are talking about going green and planning a sustainable and eco-friendly wedding. In July last year there was a simple Indian wedding that championed an eco-friendly cause. Flowers from the organic market, no plastic, no new clothes and jewellery made it a zero-waste wedding.

Thank you gifts consisted of seed bags and garden fertilizers; the latter made from ground vegetable waste from the kitchen and wrapped in appealing paper pouches

By now, you should have a better idea of what your perfect wedding day looks like, and how much you should invest. It doesn’t need to reflect “society’s standards” or have a price tag. It just needs to create memories and laughter.

2018: The Year of Women

Each year brings a lot of new experiences along, which help us to form our world view while also enabling us to make new strides. 2018 was a year of surprises and new directions. The year was all about women and women empowerment as was evident with the highly publicized #Metoo movement. It put women as the forerunners of change and thus created a legacy of empowerment. The year also saw new trends, new technologies and new spaces all dedicated towards women.

As this blog is owned by two women entrepreneurs we thought to kick start it with our round-up of all thing women!

  • The #Metoo Movement: This was one of the highlights of 2018 as the movement helped to give identity to the victims and bring forth serious issues experienced across the globe. Women have always felt unsafe and uncomfortable in myriad of situations, places and roles, they have never had the courage to come forward and speak. This movement helped countless of victim to gather courage and face their oppressors and point them out, without being worried of what the world will think or say about them. While it is still at its nascent stage, it sure will empower more women world-wide.
  • Women in Politics: The biggest example of this was Hillary Clinton running for presidency in the USA. The grit, the determination was amazing and it helped to showcase what women can achieve! Her poise throughout the campaign was commendable and she took every glitch with a stride. If nothing else, it gave more power to young women to rise in fields that are predominantly male-centric.
  • Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Wedding: While this was commercialized and talked about till no end, what I personally loved was the fact that Meghan took all the hate and trolling in her stride. It was an unconventional marriage knowing that the Royal Family is very guarded in terms of protocol. Marrying an outsider, with ethnic roots and being from a glamorous field was an achievement in itself. Moreover, she also embodied the epitome of womanhood when she sacrificed her career for the sake of marrying Prince Harry. A remarkable wedding overall.
  • Women in Gaming: Video gaming was traditionally considered a male-centric activity; however the narrative has changed considerably as the gaming scene is witnessing a rise in women viewers as well as players. No longer is the console a buy’s plaything, women are equally enjoying games like PUBG, Fortnite and the traditional Halo. According to a report by Entertainment Software Association of April 2018, 45% of US gamers are women! That is a hell lot of female gamers out there!
  • Women in Sports: P.V. Sindhu made india proud by winning
an Olympic silver medal, and one of the two Indian badminton players to ever win an Olympic medal. Sindhu also won silver in Women’s singles at Commonwealth Games 2018  and 2018 BWF World Championships. This is nothing but an achievement for Indian females who are largely absent from the global platform. Here’s to more women representation!

Thus, 2018 has been a Year of Women, and rightly so! It was year for important movements, new strides and new roles. We can only hope that moving ahead, 2019 will continue to be a year that women make new strides in all aspects of life!

A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform.
